Publisher's Summary

A Nearly Normal Family is the stunning psychological thriller from M. T. Edvardsson and asks what would you do if your child was suspected of murder, how far would you go to protect them? Do you want to know the truth? If you loved A. J. Finn’s The Woman in the Window or J. P. Delaney’s The Girl Before, you will love this.

Every murder case starts with a suspect. What if the suspect is your daughter? Would you believe her or the evidence against her?

The father

Believes his daughter has been framed.

Critic Reviews

"It is only fitting that a story about a family told in three parts should involve more than one narrator. Emily Watson, Georgia Maguire, and Richard Armitage complement each other's depictions of a dysfunctional household that is hiding secrets. Armitage opens the story with a strong interpretation of Adam's views on his family and his faith, emphasizing the strict hold he has on his daughter. Watson and Maguire pair well together, voicing a mother and daughter who are parallel in tone yet befitting and distinctive. These narrators embody a family that is not so normal after all." An excellent storyline.

The story was fascinating to listen to. And so wonderfully told. And I still listened enthralled as I decided that I did not like any member of the family! A great audiobook. I highly recommend it.

Finished it in two days. Very good!!

I really enjoyed this audiobook. I thought the way it was written was fantastic. I'm not sure if it was the writer or the voices but it really felt like the book was written by 3 different people.

I tried I really did

Must be something wrong with my taste cause this book is really popular..........ok I didn’t read it all but I just couldn’t get any further. I also can’t cope with parents adoring children. Anyway I have sent it back to it’s maker. Good riddance

Awful narration

Although I found the beginning of the story quite interesting the narrators voices made me stop listening. Would prefer to read this book myself...

Gripping and couldn’t put down

Very hard to put down this book as it was intriguing and I couldn’t have guessed what was going to happen next. Found the legal parts informative also.

Riveting Psychological Thriller

Highly recommended. I found 'A Nearly Normal Family' because the NYT recommended it as one of the best summer reads. I wasn't disappointed. As a parent, it's a chilling read. We think we know our kids and we believe our lives are normal, but truth is subjective, isn't it? Loved the story. And the narration is excellent.

Rather slow moving

On the positive side this is a believable story with credible characters, many of whom are unlikeable! The slow revelation of each character’s personality is well done. The author manages to swing our sympathies by presenting each character’s point of view in different chapters. However I found it extremely slow moving, and increased the narration speed to 2x. The narrators are excellent, with the exception of the female narrator’s odd pronunciation of ‘book’ as ‘berk’ and ‘good’ as ‘gerd’.

Really good story and performance

This book started off quite slowly, and I wasn’t sure I liked any of the characters. However, the story was intriguing enough to keep me interested and in the end I was glad I stuck with it. Having been a teenage girl myself, albeit quite some time ago, I was impressed that the author captured the arrogance, bravado, hatred of anything normal which of course is boring, and impulsiveness that I remember so well. The twist at the end was clever, although I did guess a lot of it. I recommend this audiobook if you like a slow burner. It is well worth persevering with.

Loved the tempo, the story full of swedish twists. Three view points keep you hooked and invested in each character.

Thought provoking and gripping

If you can get past the British accents reading what is clearly a translation by an American, then this is highly recommended

A Nearly Perfect Book

A wonderfully written and plotted book, great narration and a satisfying ending. I loved every minute of it and didn’t want it to end. If you like Scandinavian crime/police procedural novels with a psychological element at the heart of the plot, then give this a try. I was hooked by the end of the first chapter.

Wow!

This is an amazingly good, life like story. The readers all bring it so utterly truthfully to life and it is truly impossible to stop listening to. Well done to all involved in the production.

Engaging, Engrossing, Intriguing Scandi Thriller

I had this book on my wish list but did go for it until it came up as the Daily Deal and had I known how good it was I would have got it a long time ago as it really was very gripping and thought provoking. The story is told by three different people and includes events as seen from four viewpoints. Just like as is explained in the court case, the first story told is naturally taken as the truth and it takes very compelling evidence to sway the human brain away from believing any other version of events. This change of perspective makes the book fascinating as we learn so much more about the characters as well as the murder and the events which led up to it. Stylishly and flawlessly narrated I loved the way the book dipped from English accents into what sounded to me like fluent Swedish when place and people's names came up which made me really feel like I was in Sweden and Denmark and gave it a lovely Scandi Drama authenticity and flair. Plenty of twists and turns, lots of human emotion and frailty, interesting topics discussed in an interesting way and after listening I really feel like I know the family and could recognise them in the street. Nothing too gritty, gory, or disturbing, just thought provoking rather than thrills and chills and you certainly can read this on your own at night without getting jumpy and yet still a gentle whodunnit as well. Who is lying, who is telling the truth and who really knows their family, boyfriends or best friends as well as they think they do? That is the question. I will look out for this author again as I got into it easily and it kept me hooked and guessing and second guessing all the way to a satisfying end I thought it was very well written and translated with only a few quirks like Deer instead of Doe eyes and biking instead of cycling but overall this was quite charming and acted as a reminder that this was set in a foreign location. So now I feel like I got back from a holiday in Sweden without any of the cost or travel. Bonus!

Story strong. Some performance irritating.

I loved this book - at least up until the mother speaks. So much emphasis on "doing anything to keep this family together" and very odd alignment between mother and daughter's best friend. It was such a disappointment after the great start and just became irritating after a while. The conclusion became obvious to early through the mother's narration, so no real twist. Athough I listened to the end, I'd lost sympathy for the characters and quite disliked them by then. Father: possessive of daughter who is wayward and unlikeable. Mother: annoying and whining.

Everyone has a nearly normal family.

I loved this book. It is in 4 sections with different narrators and differing viewpoints and no one knows what the others know. And we don't know quite everything at the end. But we can guess. When the first narrator finished I was shouting no because I wanted them to continue but within minutes I was enthralled by the next narrator. I listened to this in the car and sat outside the house, not wanting to stop listening. I would recommend this book wholeheartedly and I am now looking for more books by M.T. Edwardsson.
