About this listen

"Fans of the series will enjoy exploring secondary characters' lives and the truly heroic compromises Tom makes to be with the woman he loves." (Library Journal)

He needed peace....

Solicitor Tom Finchley has spent his life using his devious intellect to solve the problems of others. As for his own problems, they're nothing that a bit of calculated vengeance can't remedy. But that's all over now. He's finally ready to put the past behind him and settle down to a quiet, uncomplicated life. If only he could find an equally uncomplicated woman.

She wanted adventure....

Former lady's companion Jenny Holloway has just been given a modest independence. Now, all she wants is a bit of adventure. A chance to see the world and experience life far outside the restrictive limits of Victorian England. If she can discover the fate of the missing Earl of Castleton while she's at it, so much the better.

From the gaslit streets of London to the lush tea gardens of colonial India, Jenny and Tom embark on an epic quest - and an equally epic romance. But even at the farthest edges of the British Empire, the past has a way of catching up with you....

I like M M books. Good story and great narration. I look forward to listening to the next book in the series.

Great narration!!

I read a lot of bad reviews about this book, mainly about it being too slow. I’m so glad I didn’t let that put me off. This was such a beautiful story, so gentle and calming. Tom Finchley is one of my now all time favourite Heroes, what a beautiful, intelligent unassuming character, I really enjoyed the make narration in this too. There were times Jenny’s character annoyed me a little, Tom didn’t deserve it, but I guess that’s all part of the story. I wish Giles character had been elaborated on a little more. I so enjoyed the history in book, I think that’s one of the things I enjoyed the most, and the travel plus the description of it all. What a beautiful beautiful romance, highly recommend, looking forward to next in the series.

So beautiful

Narration good despite a plot which dragged its way across continents. As a plot premise it was reasonably but the characters lacked depth.

As a travel log of the time it is somewhat interesting.

Not as good as the first in the series. This one was frustratingly slow and seemed to drag on and on.
Quite a disappointment as I enjoyed the first book quite a lot

Very slow

The story was very slow. If a story of a romance is going to move this slowly, it needs to have rich characters with detailed histories and vivid descriptions of scenery. This story did not do those things well.
Instead, the slow unfolding of the story was caused by repetitiveness and indecisive characters, which makes for boring reading/listening.
It clearly aimed to be different than the usual romance set in the 1800s, and it did that well.

The narrator is not my favourite performer, but not so much as to interfere with the story. This seems like a low bar of expectations, but in my experience of audio books, a narrator who can define between characters without offending the ears is not a begining standard, so I have given him 4/5.
