Folger Shakespeare Library, The World’s Leading Center for Shakespeare Studies

The Folger Shakespeare Library, home to the world's largest Shakespeare collection, brings A Midsummer Night's Dream to life with this new full-length, full-cast dramatic recording of its definitive Folger Edition.

In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Shakespeare stages the workings of love in unexpected ways. In the woods outside Athens, two young men and two young women sort themselves into couples - but not before they form first one love triangle, and then another. The king and queen of fairyland, Oberon and Titania, battle over custody of an orphan boy. Oberon uses magic to make Titania fall in love with a weaver named Bottom, in an effort to distract Titania from the custody battle. While all of this is going on, Bottom and his companions ineptly stage the tragedy of "Pyramus and Thisbe".

This new full-cast recording - based on the most respected edition of Shakespeare’s classic - expertly produced by the Folger Theatre, is perfect for students, teachers, and the everyday listener.

Very bad reading

I did not enjoy this reading at all. However, to be fair, I think it was made for English HS students... Look elsewhere for a great reading.

Performance Ruins It

The actor's performances are so bad that it feels like some sort of joke. One of the actors literally sounded like he was about to break out crying every time he spoke, no matter what he was talking about or what was happening. They were all just WAY over the top dramatic. I couldn't take them seriously.

Love Looks Not With the Eyes, But With the Mind

This is a solidly good, complete production, as all the Folger Shakespeare plays are. The play, of course, is top-notch, and the audio quality is great. The four principals are excellent, with Helena and Hermia as good as in the movie version with Kevin Kline and Calista Flockhart. My only minor complaint is the weird choice to have some of the fairies speak in tandem but not quite in unison, which almost made them sound as if they were one person speaking with an electronically altered voice (which, for all I know, was the case). But overall: ❤️ ❤️❤️❤️ Loved it, and am looking forward to my next Folger Library listen. Grade: A
