About this listen

For as long as I can remember, I've been the girl who didn't fit in, the girl who collapsed in the middle of class, just because my brain decided to turn on me. I can't really complain, though. We don't live in the Middle Ages, so I have yet to be subjected to an exorcism. I can get treatment for my condition. Epilepsy aside, I can mostly be a normal person and have a normal life.

There's just one problem. I'm not a normal person. I never have been. And the first time I find this out is upon receiving an exclusive invitation to The Academy of the Devil.

Unfortunately, The Academy of the Devil isn't like other schools and the current princes of the school have a lot of experience in ripping whatever contender they have to shreds. All of them despise humans. All of them sneer at anyone who displays any kind of weakness. All of them hate me and everything I stand for. That's fine. I don't need friends, lovers, or even valued mentors. All I need is to survive my school years with my soul, my sanity and my brain intact. It'll be a challenge, but I've dealt with worse. I might not be ready for the Academy of the Devil, but they're not ready for me either.

Contains mature themes.

This book definitely had an awesome mix of highschool and the paranormal. This book is about a girl who has epilepsy and is forced into a school filled with demons where her illness is a weakness that cannot be revealed. At the school, Alyssa - the female protagonist - meets the 'princes' of the school who are the boys most likely to become satan. She has to discover if what she feels for these boys could lead anywhere or if it is simply just a fleeting attraction. This is all happening while at every turn, Alyssa could easily end up dead and no one at the school would care. I listened to this as an audiobook and definitely found it enjoyable to listen to. The narration definitely added more character to the characters. If you think you will like this book, give it ago and maybe you will find you like it just as much as I do.

It was meandering all over the place with the plot and most solutions to the problems used Deus ex machina type resolution that were kinda annoying. Characters were rather inconsistent too.
Yet...I finished it. Something kept me listening to the end despite rolling my eyes over and over. I don't usually bother with books that have that many problems so the writing is actually quite good. Or rather, the author's voice is.
Narrator wasn't bad but chose some strange pauses from time to time? Following bad punctuation, maybe? 🤷

Meh
