About this listen

A centuries-long war, an enchanted wood, and a curse.

Idalia leaves her castle to marry the new king of the Deep, certain that this union will be the final step in saving her kingdom. She must travel through the Florian Wood, a mysterious place shrouded in legend and myth. Things go awry when the Princess is captured by a band of thieves, and they soon discover that the stories of the Wood weren’t just stories after all.

To make matters worse, she is stranded in this nightmare with her rival: a shameless bandit who likes to talk and drink too much. Despite the dangers of the Wood, there is a threat far graver to the both of them—each other. Apart from their warring lands, they have also been cursed by the gods. They can never touch, or they will die, and their entire kingdoms with them.

Join Idalia and a group of misfits on this harrowing journey. One full of sorrow, terror, forbidden love… and plenty of drinks.

I definitely wasn’t invested in the first half of the book and I’m not sure if it was the writing or if I was distracted by the book I had just finished prior to starting A Forbidden Fate.
I really enjoyed the concept of the book but was disappointed by the lack of fantasy world - it seems more like a romance book with some magical elements.
I’d love the characters to have more depth and some scenes felt melodramatic instead of genuine.
I think it has great potential and I’m definitely reading book 2 to see where it leads. Book 3 isn’t out on audio until May, so I’m keen to start from the beginning again when that comes out to refresh my memory as well as give it a second chance to take me away in the story so that I can better gauge if it was the book that held me back or if it was impacted by where my head was at when I started the book.
I definitely felt like I was more invested towards the end and am hoping the intrigue continues.
The narrators did an excellent job on the audiobook.
