Publisher's Summary

Each time my mother laid a finger on me...it was another step into the jaws of hell. Her abuse, more so than any other, destroyed me. It was the ultimate betrayal.

Abused from the age of eight by her older brother and then her step-father, Maureen Wood quickly became numb to the constant suffering. But Maureen’s world crumbled when her own mother started to abuse her too....

A Family Secret is the harrowing true story of how one little girl survived sickening abuse by the people who should have loved her most and how an innocent baby finally saved her.

Bravery in Spades

The author shares her life with brutal honesty and reveals the darkest of taboos. As someone who has suffered similarly, her story of justice provides hope. Please be aware that this book is filled with triggers and survivors should proceed with caution.

sad but good

the narrator was great. I loved the story and can somewhat relate to the childhood abuse. although hers was worse than mine still the same pain. I really enjoyed hearing about her life and I'm so glad she got her justice.

Horrible and Heartwarming

This memoir managed to walk the tightrope of exposing the worst betrayal by parents and family, without being maudlin or falling into self-pity. The human heart, the human spirit, can live through the worst that human evil has to offer, and if given the chance, can become stronger and a beacon of hope to other victims. Well done, Maureen! (My only criticism is the decision to spend the month of August in Central Florida. You REALLY should have called me first! 😉)

a story of strength and courage

I found it very difficult to listen to at the beginning; the absolute violence made me sick. I was drawn in and stayed with it hoping for and looking for a safe haven for Maureen. I found it as her life went on--strength and courage

justice

A courageous lady to bring her abusers to justice. Giving hope to many victims suffering in silence.
The guiltier person in my mind was the Mother in which I use the term loosely.
Her stepdad was a predator making Maureen an easy target.
What confused with the brother they were once so close protecting her yet changed so dramatically I think encouraged largely by the mother I think once he had committed the awful act he too become the monster.

One of the most amazing audiobooks I've ever heard

I don't really have the right words for this book. It's amazing, heartbreaking, heartwarming. Such a strong, brave child that went through it all. An absolute inspiration to us survivors.
This will always be a favourite.

Unsettling yet engaging listen

Very sad listen of a poor child who never really experienced what it truly should feel like to be a child.
No child should suffer in the hands of those who should love, care and protect you.
Thank you for your bravery in sharing Maureen and Rachel for fab narrative.

Although A harrowing factual story A Brave Victim

As my review title stated it’s a very upsetting story which Maureen Wood as had to persevere with throughout her very young age right up until a young woman and what’s upsetting for me is the small amount of years that Maureen own Brother, Mother and Step Father’s as been sent to Prison for, and why oh why where they allowed to live very near to where Maureen and her brave supportive family lives.
I was pleased to find out that Maureen was awarded a substantial amount of money from the local council which runs social services.
