About this listen
1914, Fiji: Sergeant Akal Singh would rather be anywhere than this tropical paradise - or, as he calls it, 'this godforsaken island'. After a promising start to his police career in Hong Kong, Akal has been sent to the far-flung colony of Fiji as punishment for a humiliating professional mistake. Lonely and embarrassed, he dreams of solving a big case, thereby redeeming himself and gaining permission to leave. Otherwise, he fears he will be stuck in Fiji for ever.
When an indentured Indian woman goes missing from a sugarcane plantation and Fiji's newspapers scream 'kidnapping', the inspector-general reluctantly assigns Akal the case, giving him strict instructions to view this investigation as nothing more than cursory. But as soon as Akal arrives on the plantation, he identifies several troubling inconsistencies in the plantation owners' stories, and it seems there is more to this disappearance than meets the eye . . .

Good story but actor disappointed
The actor/reader was the wrong choice for this story. His Fijian accent was awful - Fijians do not have Australian accents, and he mispronounced many Fijian words. I felt that distracted me from the story. It left me frustrated and took away from the story which on its own merit was interesting. Although there was a lot of confusion with the Fiji Times notations, especially because there was no real pause from the actor when reading the notations. I heard at the end the Fiji Times notations really had nothing to do with the story, again confusing because I was trying to link it. Another odd part was the peeping Tom storyline which went nowhere and just disappeared. Good story but the Audio version probably let it down.

A good historical fiction
This was an easy listen and a good historical mystery that though predictable did have its share of twists. can't believe this slice of colonial history hasn't been explored before.

atmospheric mystery
This was an interesting, well-researched mystery. There are not nearly enough books, especially historical books set in the Pacific and Disappearance in Fiji is a refreshing and nuanced addition that was very exciting to come across. i look forward to more books in the series (I hope it's a series) and more from this author. The narrator also did a good job bringing the story to life.
