About this listen

It's 1984. The miners' strike is dividing the country. In a struggling coal-mining town, the miners and their families are living at the edge of their resources. On the 14th of December, five miners break ranks to travel to Nottingham and work. For those who stay behind, this is an unforgivable betrayal.

Twenty-three years later, a young woman is asking the police to trace her missing father. Miner Mick Prentice vanished, never to be seen again. Soon, DI Karen Pirie and DS Phil Parharta find themselves investigating a forgotten disappearance.

Good story with challenging plot and interesting background with realistic characters. Just a bit of a sudden end even though the outcomes are inferred.

Interesting interwoven stories great characters

Parts of this book were great. Not a lot of suspense or twists. I liked the main character.

Abrupt ending!

Great story, thoroughly enjoyable -- although easy to predict the outcome. The reader has a lovely voice but makes a few gaffes . Definitely the worst Italian accent in the history of audible.

Wonderful book, worst Italian accent ever!

Long drawn out story only to end suddenly. The pronunciation of Italian words and city/region names was distracting.

Abrupt ending!

An enjoyable listen did make me wish we could travel overseas. Another good nook in the series of DI Karen Pirie.

Interesting how all the threads tied together at the end

Really enjoyed this book, apart from a couple of spots where I felt it was a 'get out quick moment'.
The ending was quite blunt and I had to listen several times to appreciate what had been written.
I did enjoy it though and saw different perspectives on the miners' strike and Mrs Thatchers role in almost starving out a whole section of the British community.
Well done!

Keeps you guessing ...

She is so rebellious, tenacious and straight. I like her blossoming relationship too. Story ended abruptly for me but still a great listen.

Do love Karen.

Probably my favourite of her wonderful stories. Absolutely brilliant narration. Recommend reading for all who appreciate a beautifully crafted story.

Better than ever.
