It's 1984. The miners' strike is dividing the country. In a struggling coal-mining town, the miners and their families are living at the edge of their resources. On the 14th of December, five miners break ranks to travel to Nottingham and work. For those who stay behind, this is an unforgivable betrayal.

Twenty-three years later, a young woman is asking the police to trace her missing father. Miner Mick Prentice vanished, never to be seen again. Soon, DI Karen Pirie and DS Phil Parharta find themselves investigating a forgotten disappearance.

Good story with challenging plot and interesting background with realistic characters. Just a bit of a sudden end even though the outcomes are inferred.

Interesting interwoven stories great characters

This is the book in which Karen Pirie is, for the first time, the main protagonist. Excellent story, great relationships between characters and a very twisting, winding, complex narrative that moves between the 1980’s and 2000’s. The writing is so good - the different time-frames and interconnected stories not only stand on their own but also join each other without any reader confusion.

I’m enjoying McDermid’s Karen Pirie very much. Terrific police procedural thrillers. Very well written and very well thought out. I highly recommend them.

Great story, thoroughly enjoyable -- although easy to predict the outcome. The reader has a lovely voice but makes a few gaffes . Definitely the worst Italian accent in the history of audible.

Wonderful book, worst Italian accent ever!
