Publisher's Summary

Life held little joy for Celia Murray. Forced by poverty to leave her aunt, who had been her only source of love and warmth, Celia goes to the city to find a job. There she tries to make the best of her new home: a dreary boarding house.

Then everything changes! Celia receives an unexpected inheritance and sets about to make her dreams come true. She sends for her Aunt Hannah, and together they work a miraculous transformation on the old boarding house, making it into a place of warmth and laughter. Yet Celia struggles with a sense that there is something - or someone - missing.

Enter handsome Horace Stafford, minister of the mission chapel. At first Celia believes this is a man whose faith and compassion matches her own. But when a terrible misunderstanding comes between them, will Celia ever be able to confess, even to Horace, the deepest desire of her heart?

A Daily Rate

Grace Livingston Hill was a wonderful author. Audible.com should have more of her books available. I know that quite a few of her books were available on audio cassette in the past, but it is hard to find them these days. The audio presentation was excellent; the narrator did very well and had a voice that is easy to listen to. I would see if the narrator has read any other books that would be worth listening to. Wish there were more books by Grace Livingston Hill on the site!

Excellent, convicting

It had been a long long time since I read a GLH book. I had forgotten how good they are, and how full of convicting principles that make you want to live a fuller Christian life. Sigh. Unique story line.

White bread

GLH wrote many books over the course of her lifetime, some better than most, a few clunkers and a few really good ones. They’re all in the public domain, thankfully. I’m sure she would have wanted it that way.
It’s difficult to choose which ones to record unless you’re familiar with her work. I’ve tried to let the Editors at Audible know that the best way to choose is to survey the listeners who know. I’ve emailed them three times but never received a response. Maybe they read reviews and someone will see this.
I like many of them, such as The Obsession of Victoria Gracen, The Gold Shoe, The Man of the Desert, The Beloved Stranger, Ladybird, Head of the House, Spice Box, Rainbow Cottage....
This story, A Daily Rate, is not one of her best.

Beautiful narration

This old Christian classic was written in 1900 and set in Philadelphia. Susan O’Malley’s performance brought the book to life. It’s a heartwarming story, especially for Aunt Hannah and young Mamie. I was happy to see the impoverished boarders finally get some good food and service and a sense of home. I wasn’t crazy about Celia, who seemed silly and judgmental. I felt there was a bit too much digression from the story into preaching, Bible verses, etc. They fit the character certainly but they also slowed the flow and sometimes seemed to go on too long. The romance is only a small part of the story.

I like to briefly step into olden days with these old stories — to see what life was like back then. There was “the three cents store” and regular deliveries by the milkman, the bread man, the coal man, etc. Also, a rather appalling minimum of housing and restaurant regulations, etc. A young female clerk in a department store in the big city earned about $6.00 per week. At least for girls at that time, a “good education” was to attend “a common school course followed by a couple years in the High School.” The Board of Health existed and shut down a boarding house when a case of scarlet fever appeared. Some people went to church, others didn’t.

Need more of Mrs Hill's books recorded!!

Reader was very good mostly. She needs a dictionary, though, and learn how to pronounce words. I love Grace Livingston Hill's books and am disappointed that there was only one out of the more than 50 books that she wrote.

A Beautiful I site full story

I hesitated in listening to this story. It was exactly what I needed when I needed it. A strong Christian theme. Opening the hearts of those that have faced challenges in their lives and their ability to turn to God and overcome adversity. I strongly recommend it.
