Story
Privacy is hard to maintain in Badara, the kind of small Australian country town where everyone knows everyone else's business. So discovers single mum Paige when she and her three children arrive from the city seeking refuge. Paige's only respite from child care and loneliness is the Tuesday gym club, where she had feared the judgement of the town matriarchs, but she is met only with generosity and a plethora of baked goods. Besides, both the brusque Marion and her polished sister-in-law Briony are too busy dealing with their own dramas to examine hers.

Story
Dolly Jamieson is not homeless, she's merely between permanent abodes. The 78-year-old spends her days keeping warm at the local library, where she enjoys sparring with the officious head librarian and helping herself to the free morning tea. It's not so bad, really. But it's certainly a far cry from the 1960s, when this humble girl from Geelong became an international star of the stage. As the acclaimed lead in the Broadway production of The Rose of France, all Dolly's dreams had come true. So how, in her old age, did she end up here?

Heartbreakingly beautiful.
I used to love fiction but the last few years have seen me almost exclusively read / listen to personal development literature. Caravan like a Canary changed that for me.
Listening to this book made me feel like a silent bystander. The characters were so real I could almost reach out and touch them. Like all great fiction, I felt their emotions and experienced the full range myself. The author’s ability to create empathy is exceptional.
This is outstanding Australian literature and I’m just sad I’ve finished the book. I wanted it to keep going. I’d rate it 5 popcorn buckets for sure (That’s 10/10 for those of you who haven’t read it).

A good story well read
I really enjoyed this Australian family story. Characters were well drawn. The brother Zac was believable yet exasperating. Tara, the main character, desperately trying to put everything right, was also very believable. Nan was beautifully portrayed as the rock, giving both siblings love and stability.
I liked Zac for most of the story, but felt his character disappointed me at the end.
Well worth a listen.
