About this listen

During the year 1866, ships of several nations spot a mysterious sea monster, which some suggest to be a giant narwhal. The United States government assembles an expedition in New York City to find and destroy the monster. Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist and narrator of the story, who happens to be in New York at the time, receives a last-minute invitation to join the expedition which he accepts. Canadian whaler and master harpoonist Ned Land and Aronnax's faithful servant Conseil are also brought aboard.

Pro tip: don't Google any of the flora or fauna mentioned by scientific names, you'll be there all year. Just accept what is said at face value and enjoy the ride. Adventure, biology, geography, a character study, tradgedy, multiple bromances, this book has a bit of everything.

A slow burn scientific adventure

The story is very compelling and reflects the fascination with scientific discovery of the period. I really enjoyed this narrator. I listened to a dozen samples of other narrators before choosing this one.

Good and well read but not as good as the mysterious island which having now listened to many from verne is the best.

This was my first Verne and I found it lacking. So many interesting events, sure, but I found it drawn out, boring and repetitive - "ah help us, there's a situation, oh yay Nemo saved us". Endless descriptions and then the ending was predictable.

Am I the only one who doesn't like Jules Verne?
