芥川龍之介は大正期の小説家です。1892年東京都生まれ。東京帝国大学在学中の1916年に第四次「新思潮」創刊号に発表した「鼻」が夏目漱石に絶賛され文壇にデビューしました。初期の古典を材料にした「羅生門」「芋粥」「地獄変」などの名作を経て、「点鬼簿」「歯車」など自己の周辺にテーマを得た作品に移行。様々なトラブルで心身とも衰弱し、1927年に自殺して36歳の若さでこの世を去りました。没後、親友である菊池寛によって、芥川賞が創設されています。
