 ある北の荒野に足を踏み入れた人間とイヌたち。しかし、日を追うごとに減っていくイヌの数。その原因は、ある赤毛のメスオオカミでした。
この赤毛のメスは、片目をケガした灰色オオカミとの間に5匹の子オオカミをもうけます。その5匹のうち1匹だけは、父親と同じ灰色の毛を受け継いだオオカミでした。
この灰色オオカミは、成長するにつれて外の世界を知り、生きていく術を身につけていきます。
そして「人間」という生き物に出会い、その人間から「ホワイト・ファング」という名前をもらった灰色オオカミは、人間とともに暮らしていたキャンプ場でイヌのリプ＝リプとケンカをするうちに、だんだんと狂暴になっていきます。
