フランス領アルザス地区のある小さな村に住む少年・フランツは、フランス語の勉強が苦手でした。
フランツがフランス語の予習をまったくしていない上に、学校に遅刻してしまったある日。
森の中から聞こえる鳥の鳴き声や、兵隊たちの訓練に後ろ髪を引かれつつ学校へ急いでいると、役場の前にひとだかりができていました。
そこには、あることを知らせる貼り紙が貼られた掲示板があったのです。
しかしフランツはそれを見ることなく学校に向かい、教室へ。すると、なぜか正装をしたフランス語のアメル先生の姿、そして村の人たちや郵便屋さんの姿が。
いつもと違う教室の雰囲気に驚くフランツや生徒たちを前に、アメル先生は「今日が最後のフランス語の授業であること」を伝えます。
それは、ドイツ語以外の言葉を教えてはならない、というベルリンからの命令によるものだったのです。戦争に翻弄される人々の悲劇が凝縮された、ある1日の物語。
