雁(かり)なくやつらをはなれてただ一つ
初恋をする少年のごと
光源氏の息子夕霧（ゆうぎり）の元服が行われた。祖母大宮（おおみや）の嘆きをよそに、源氏は夕霧を六位という低い官位にし、身分に頼らずに学問をした上で立身出世させる教育方針を示した。
冷泉帝の后は源氏が推す斎宮の女御に決まる。内大臣（ないだいじん）は娘弘徽殿女御（こきでんのにょご）が后になれなかったことに落胆し、大宮に育てられている娘雲居雁（くもいのかり）の東宮入内を期待するが、雲居雁は大宮のもとにいた幼馴染の夕霧と恋仲になっていた。それを知った内大臣は立腹し、雲居雁を自邸に引き取る。一方源氏は花散里（はなちるさと）に夕霧の世話を託した。
源氏がかねて造営していた六条院がついに完成した。四季を配した邸内には、春は紫の上、夏は花散里、秋は斎宮の女御の里帰りに、冬は明石の君がそれぞれ移り住んだ。
