光源氏 五十歳
主な登場人物 女三の宮
すずむしは釈迦牟(しゃかむ)尼仏(にぶつ)のおん弟子の
君のためにと秋を浄(きよ)むる
女三の宮の御持仏の供養が行われた。光源氏はこまごまと装飾や道具を寄進する。朱雀院（すざくいん）は尼になった女三の宮の住まいを移すことを望むが、源氏は承服しない。そして、女三の宮の世話を永久に引き受けることを、源氏は約束するのだった。
秋になり、源氏は女三の宮の前庭を風情のあるように作り直し、虫を放った。虫の音にかこつけて女三の宮への執心を訴える源氏であったが、女三の宮は愛欲から離れて静かに暮らすことを望むばかりである。
中秋の名月に、源氏は女三の宮を訪ね、虫の音を賞美しながら琴を弾く。他の公達も集まり、管弦の宴が開かれた。そこへ冷泉院（れいぜいいん）からのお召しがあり、源氏たちはにわかに冷泉院のもとへ参上する。冷泉院は源氏の来訪をことに喜んだ。
