花のあるじはのどやかに待つ
按察使（あぜち）大納言は故太政大臣の息子で、柏木（かしわぎ）の弟にあたる。前妻を亡くし、真木柱（まきばしら）と再婚をした。娘は、先妻との間の二人の姫君と真木柱の連れ子の姫君がいる。
姉を東宮に入内させた按察使大納言は、妹を匂宮（におうのみや）に嫁がせたいと考え、紅梅を添えて匂宮に歌を贈る。しかし、匂宮が関心を寄せているのは妹の姫君ではなく、真木柱の連れ子の姫君であった。匂宮は姫君の幼い弟を格別かわいがり、その弟を介して姫君への思いを伝えるのだった。
姫君は匂宮の好意に気づいてはいるが、父と死別している自分の境涯から結婚をあきらめている。
真木柱は複雑な思いで事の成り行きを見ていたが、多情で宇治の八の宮の姫君にも執心だという匂宮に娘を託す気にはなれないのだった。
