Zahra Joya, an Afghan journalist, has been reporting since 2011, focusing on women’s and children’s issues. In 2020, she founded Rukhshana Media, a women-led news outlet covering women’s issues in Afghanistan. The news agency is named after a woman who was stoned to death in 2015, for trying to marry the man of her choosing. Shortly after the Taliban takeover in Aug. 2021, Joya was evacuated to Britain, where she continues to manage Rukhshana Media from London. Joya's work has earned her global recognition, including being named one of Time magazine’s Women of the Year in 2022, BBC 100 women of the year 2022 and receiving several prestigious journalism and advocacy awards. Despite being separated from her family, who remain in exile elsewhere, Zahra is a powerful advocate for Afghan women’s rights and freedom of expression. She is a By-Fellow at Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge.
