Woodrow “Pack” Landfair is an American road storyteller, musician, and accidental entrepreneur who wound up in the small historical surf town of El Porto, California, owning the longstanding El Porto Surf Shop and the attached neighborhood liquor store.
An unexpected walk-on member of the 2005 College World Series champion baseball team while on academic scholarship at the University of Texas, he soon pawned his ring to buy a used motorcycle - beginning what would become the first of three unplanned 48-state road trips over the next two decades. That material became fodder for live storytellings, a novel, and a collection of road journals.
A surfer since boyhood - after divorce sent his father from Washington DC to Venice Beach, Santa Monica then San Francisco - Pack is currently 19 countries into a quest to surf every coastal nation on earth, chronicled in his forthcoming series, Surf Journals.
In 2017 Landfair moved to El Porto (established in 1911 and officially removed from city government maps in 2008) to re-invigorate the town's otherwise forgotten main street as a worldwide surf and beach oriented folk destination, in the spirit of Luckenbach, Texas - as made famous by Hondo Crouch, Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie Nelson, and Waylon Jennings during the 1970s.
Since 2021 El Porto Surf Shop has welcomed neighbors, surfers and travelers to monthly Porto First Thursday Parties featuring live music from local musicians, with food and drinks compliments of neighborhood restaurants. Along with the neighborhood's two hotels, four bars and nearly two dozen eateries - they co-organize the Annual El Porto Surf Contest and Beach Festival, held every February on El Porto Beach. Open 365 days a year at 6:30am, the store served customers from all fifty states and over ninety countries in 2025. In 2026, the shop added the words "Welcome" in 18 languages throughout the mural that greets those entering the neighborhood - with the words "The world surfs El Porto" - as an open-arm gesture to free spirts everywhere.
