First off, thanks for taking the time to click through! I guess my life has been as varied as the genres of books that I have written with my wonderful co-author, Melanie Willems. Early life in Ruthin, North Wales, ran into university at Cambridge, then teaching English in Turin and Milan - where I supplemented my meagre teaching wages with gogo dancing at the weekend. A sojourn in Indonesia managing a couple of projects painting murals, and then opening and running a cocktail and juice bar in Gran Canaria, were further delightful detours on the way to a twenty-year spell as a proper adult working in telecoms and digital infrastructure. It was during one of the duller years at work, that I started writing. The first project came about as Melanie and I had been bemoaning the paucity of decent representations of "our" London (where we both live), and in a fit of slightly tipsy enthusiasm, vowed that we would write a London novel together. Shockingly, we actually did. I have always loved language, and rather than getting bored as I had expected, I kept on writing and writing, and over the course of the next few years, Melanie and I co-wrote and published a whole trilogy. People always ask about writing with someone else. I think it can only work if you have a shared vision of what the book should be about, and also, that you are compatible and can tell each other hard truths without falling out. It can be really hard when your co-author is singularly unimpressed by a "brilliant" piece of writing you have produced, however it has helped to edit out self-indulgent pieces early on, and also made us both far more resilient to critique. Overall, for us, the benefits have far outweighed the drawbacks. We spurred each other on, and had a lot of laughs along the way. The traumas of Brexit led us to write a political parody, and then all the talk of human habitation on Mars led us to write Adam and the Gayliens. The research was immense fun, as were the Gayliens. The next book is a fantasy / magical realism novel based in my home town of Ruthin, and is more of a solo project for me. This is still a work in progress.
