I grew up in a middle-class home in a small town in Southern Minnesota during the 1950s and 1960s. My father worked on the railroad while my mother was a stay-at-home mom. I played sports and games with other neighborhood kids spending morning, noon, and night in the summers outside. It was a good way to get away from what was going on at home. My sister was nearly seven years older, and as such, we did not have a close relationship. She moved out of the house when I was eleven years old. The Madigan family is of Irish heritage with many of them addicted to alcohol or drugs. Dad was not immune from that dependency, which ultimately caused his death at age sixty-five. I faced many challenges growing up, but found success in my personal and professional life having become a professional civil engineer with a master’s degree in business administration. I have been married for thirty-nine years with two children and three granddaughters.

This book is a memoir outlining my experiences growing up in a dependent parent environment and how that childhood trauma impacted me, my sister, mom and dad. The book walks through some of the current theories on the causes of alcoholism and the traits that develop for children growing up in that household. It outlines how I was able to rise above my upbringing through the help of my wife, mentors, and professional counseling to find success.
