Peter Lovatt (1964 - ) is an academic psychologist who specialises in the study of movement and dance. Before training as a psychologist, Peter was a professional dancer. Peter trained in dance and musical theatre at the Guildford School of Acting before becoming a professional dancer. Peter had always struggled with reading and writing and when he was in his early 20's and performing in a theatre show, he decided to tackle his reading difficulties head on. He used what he knew about learning patterns of movement and dance to help him learn to understand patterns of letters and words. Becoming a competent reader changed his life. After taking degrees in Psychology and English (BSc), Neural Computation (MSc) and Experimental Cognitive Psychology (PhD) Peter found himself in the Faculty of English at Cambridge University, where he studied how the brain processes language. While he was at Cambridge he had the idea to apply his scientific knowledge of the brain and human behaviour to his love of dance. He set up the Dance Psychology Lab at the University of Hertfordshire in 2008 to study the science of dance and dancers, and he currently teaches Dance Psychology to dance students, and to students of dance teaching, at the Royal Ballet School in London. He is the co-founder of the Movement in Practice Academy. Peter published his first book, Dance Psychology, in 2018. His second book, The Dance Cure, was first published in the UK by Short Books in April 2020. The Dance Cure was shortlisted for the Books Are My Bag Readers Award for non-fiction and was listed as one of the Best Books of 2020 by The Observer. The Dance Cure, the surprising science to being smarter, stronger, happier is published in the US by HarperOne, an imprint of HarperCollins, in January 2021. Peter writes about what it feels like to dance, and how the simple act of dancing improves lives. His mantra is “you move, you improve”. Dr Peter Lovatt is sometimes known as Dr Dance.
