OSVALDO SORIANO (1943-1997) began working in journalism (Primera Plana, Panorama, La Opinión) in the mid-1960s, and became known as a writer in 1973 with his highly original novel Triste, solitario y final. Although he would publish his next two books (There will be no more sorrows or forgetfulness and Winter quarters) during his exile in Europe, the appearance of both in Argentina in 1982 would make him in absentia the most widely read living author in the country. His return to democracy and his role as alma mater of the newspaper Página/12 would further reinforce this link with readers: four more novels (A lion surrendered to his plants, in 1986; A shadow you will soon be, in 1990; The eye de la patria, in 1992 and La hora sin sombra, in 1995) and four volumes with his best journalistic chronicles (Artists, madmen and criminals, in 1984; Rebels, dreamers and fugitives, in 1988; Tales of happy years, in 1993 and Pirates, Ghosts and Dinosaurs, in 1996) would transform it into a contemporary classic of Argentine literature. His books have been translated into eighteen languages and successfully adapted for the screen.
