Milton Schacter was a prosecuting attorney for twenty years. He then switched to the dark side and became a criminal defense attorney. Of course, the true professional can argue from either side of the table. Most of his career has been spent writing briefs, memorandums, points and authorities, and a multitude of motions, both as a prosecutor and as a defense attorney. Although the stuff of lawyer writing is dry, the people who are defendants, or clients, are not. Some of those persons are very bad, some are normal, and some are very funny. You should hear about them. So, with a little imagination, and a glass of brandy, he began to write his first novel, Misdemeanor Trials. It is about a lawyer, John Trader, who returns to his military roots to combat evils against America. Even Milton's ex-wife thought it was good read. Readersfavorite has three five star reviews. Published in the fall of 2020 is Milton's second book. It is about Bradley Miller, a white boy who became a lawyer. His experiences were varied, and some very bad. He had regrets. He dies and returns as a fifteen-year-old black male, born on the same day and year as he was born as Bradley Miller, who lived in the darkest part of the ghetto. But he had the memory of Bradley Miller's life and his own memory of the ghetto. The story is how regrets from a previous life are managed. Black college students and even black basketball players were still somewhat of a novelty during that time and DeShawn found himself in some difficult and testing situations at times that relied on Bradley's memories, disappointments, and experiences to push through.
The premise behind Regrets intrigued me from the get-go. Author Milton Schacter did a wonderful job of combining two incredibly disparate characters in Bradley and DeShawn. The idea that we could use someone else's life experience to ensre that we kept our own life on track was a novel one for me and I thoroughly enjoyed the exploration of DeShawn's adult awakening. I really appreciated the author's ability to raise important moral questions about the situation, questions that are applicable to us all and I found the story and plot flowed seamlessly from Bradley to DeShawn. The '60s and '70s with the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the social upheaval was the perfect setting for this story. What I loved was the synchronicity between the two lives of Bradley and DeShawn and that their paths had actually crosed back when Bradley was just fifteen and experienced the trauma that would blight the path of his own life. The writing style flows wonderfully and I appreciated the flashbacks to Bradley's life experiences which help explain why he was, to some extent, the quintessential grumpy old man who had lived a life full of regrets. This book just flows and was easy to read. I you like a premise that is a bit different from the rest and a story that makes you think and question your own life motivations, pick up this fantastic read. I can highly recommend Regrets."
On May 18, 2021 I published my third book "Devlin's Unarmed Insurrection". Michael Hughes owned an engineering company and played golf with one of his golfing friend, Jim Shelton. Jim and his wife left for the weekend and asked Hughes to watch his house. Jim never returned, and Hughes suddenly was visited by thugs who demanded money and threatened his life. He had no idea what they were talking about until he learned that Jim Shelton had stolen his identity. Weird, since Michael Hughes was a name fabricated specifically for him. Hughes sets out to find Shelton to end the danger to himself. Before he could locate Shelton, his peaceful life began to unravel, and he became the focus of attention from the FBI,the CIA and a criminal enterprise.
