As a historical researcher for over forty years, Michael Hill has assisted such authors as David McCullough, Jon Meacham, Sebastian Junger, and Nathaniel Philbrick. He won an Emmy in 1991 for his work as a co-producer on the Ken Burns PBS "Civil War" series narrated by David McCullough. He also served as a historical consultant on the HBO mini-series, "John Adams" produced by Tom Hanks, and the ABC-TV mini-series, "Challenger" about the space shuttle disaster. Hill is the author of "Elihu Washburne: The Diary and Letters of America's Minister to France During the Siege and Commune of Paris" (with a foreword by historian David McCullough), and "War Poet: The Life of Alan Seeger and His Rendezvous With Death," which was described by the Wall Street Journal as a “ … worthy addition to the canon of that war, one that emphasizes less its futility than its heartbreak in a worthy cause ..." In 2022 Hill wrote "Funny Business: The Legendary Life and Political Satire of Art Buchwald" published by Random House. Christopher Buckley (who wrote the foreword) called it a "totally marvelous book" and the Washington Post called it a "brisk and engaging biography." Most recently, Hill has worked on "History Matters," a posthumous collection of thought-provoking essays—many never published before—by Pulitzer Prize winning historian and bestselling author David McCullough. Hill is co-editor of the book along with Mr. McCullough's, daughter, Dorie McCullough Lawson. The book, to be published by Simon and Schuster, is set for release in September, 2025. Hill is currently at work on a short novel titled, THE LEGEND OF HARRY GARDNER. Written in the tradition of the popular 1920s sports dime novels, HARRY GARDNER is a poignant tale about the friendship between two college friends. One, a celebrated football hero; the other a shy, non-athletic college sports writer. The story is packed with plenty of old-time gridiron heroics along with a series of surprising twists and turns in their deep, personal friendship. The book is scheduled for release in January 2026. Hill is also the author (under the pen name "Jack Fitzgerald"), of "Hackett at Large," a collection of short stories that takes the reader on a colorful and humorous romp through Paris in the 1960s with the tough, yet tender-hearted fictional American journalist, Benjamin J. Hackett. During his many adventures, Hackett encounters some of the most memorable authentic celebrities from that remarkable decade: Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, President John F. Kennedy, Jack Kerouac, The Beatles, and supermodel “Twiggy.” Prior to embarking on his career as a writer and historical researcher, Hill served as a press assistant to Vice President Walter F. Mondale. He is a graduate of Kent State University, the Akron University School of Law, and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
