Maureen Groden has been a hospice nurse and educator for several decades. She obtained her undergraduate degree in nursing from the University of MA and her graduate degree from the University of CT. Maureen holds certification as a Hospice and Palliative Care Registered Nurse from The Hospice and Palliative Care Credentialing Center.
During her career, Maureen held leadership positions as the Director of Hospice and Palliative Care at several major health care systems. In these roles, Maureen was instrumental in leading quality hospice and palliative care teams in the care of patients with serious and terminal illnesses. Maureen was named “Manager of the Year." by The Home Care Alliance of Massachusetts. In addition, the Palliative Care Program received the “Award for Innovation in Palliative Care.”
Maureen served on numerous committees including: the Patient-Family Advisory Committee, Cancer Center Committee, Hospital Readmission Reduction Committee, and the Ethics Committee. Maureen has conducted dozens of community education programs at nursing homes, assisted living facilities, veteran organizations, faith communities and libraries. She engages the public in discussions on advanced directives, palliative care and hospice.
In addition to clinical leadership, Maureen Groden has taught nursing at several local baccalaureate nursing programs. She primarily taught Community and Public Health Nursing to undergraduate students. Her students have interned at numerous community sites, including visiting nurse agencies, hospices, senior centers, and outpatient clinics. She co-developed and taught an honors-level course entitled, “How Do We Compassionately Talk About Death?” She has presented widely at conferences on Palliative Care and Hospice.
Maureen has been a member of several professional health care organizations. She currently serves on the Education Committee of the Hospice and Palliative Care Federation of MA. Previously she held the position of Regulatory Consultant for this state hospice association and frequently presents at their annual conference. She has been actively involved with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (now National Alliance for Care at Home) and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nurses, where she was past president of the local chapter, Beta Zeta-at-Large.
“Everyone should do something to help their community” has always been a mantra of Maureen’s. To this end, she has served on numerous town committees and was elected to the Board of Health, School Committee, and two terms on the Select Board.
Maureen has developed a passion for helping families navigate our health care system when their loved one has a serious illness. She also wants to help families experience a peaceful end-of-life journey. Maureen wrote When a Loved One Is Dying: Conversations About Care, Connection & Coping to help readers understand what happens when people are dying and how to care for them.
