As a frequent blogger and a fourteen-time contributor to the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, Lorraine enjoys telling stories to express what her life is like, with the goal of breaking down barriers between those with disabilities and those without them. Her book, More the Same than Different: What I Wish People Knew About Respecting and Including People with Disabilities, was born based on feedback she got from people who follow her blog. They wanted to be respectful of those with disabilities, they said, but they didn't know what to do. Because they didn't want to be offensive, they ended up not doing anything. This book is an answer to that dilemma. It is a guide to diminish the awkwardness around communicating with this often-overlooked population. As a six-year-old, she was selected to be a poster child for United Cerebral Palsy in Bergen County, New Jersey. That was an experience that evoked tremendous amounts of pity from people she didn't even know. As she grew older and learned to embrace her disability, she found her voice and learned advocacy skills and was eventually crowned Ms. Wheelchair Kansas 2007. Lorraine is quick to say that she is by no means an expert in all things disability. She knows that there are as many opinions about disability as there are people affected by them, but her master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, as well as her vast personal experience with both a physical disability and a mental health diagnosis, has uniquely prepared her for challenging some negative perceptions around people in the disability community. Lorraine lives in Lawrence, Kansas with her phenomenal dog, Levi.
