Loretta Smith lives and works on Wurundjeri country as a writer, public speaker and life coach. Her career has spanned teaching, community arts, case management and various roles in disability, mental health and aged care sectors. Her bestselling biography A Spanner in the Works: The extraordinary Story of Alice Anderson and Australia's first all-girl garage (Hachette 2019) has been optioned for a TV series and was optioned for the play Garage Girls, written and performed by The Shift and Three Birds Theatre to a sell-out audience at La Mama Theatre, Melbourne, in 2023/24. The play also toured throughout regional Australia in 2024-2026 as part of the VCE playlist. Her most recent publication, Corpus in Extremis: a memoir (Spinifex 2024) speaks to her resilience living with the rare genetic bone condition, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, and includes the backstory to her researching and writing Alice Andersons's biography. Loretta recently worked as co-producer, assistant director and musical coordinator for Ms Julie Gabler: trapped, written and directed by Kathleen Mary Fallon performed at Theatreworks in Melbourne 30 July - 9 August 2025. She is now focussed on a collaborative community project to raise funds for a bronze statue of Alice Anderson to be erected in the City of Boroondara, Victoria.
