Laura Amy Schlitz is the author of the 2008 Newbery Medal-winning GOOD MASTERS! SWEET LADIES! VOICES FROM A MEDIEVAL VILLAGE, illustrated by Robert Byrd, and the 2013 Newbery Honor book SPLENDORS AND GLOOMS.
Her novels include A DROWNED MAIDEN'S HAIR, which won a Cybil award for fiction, SPLENDORS AND GLOOMS, and THE HIRED GIRL, which won the National Jewish Book Award for Young Adult Literature, the Scott O'Dell award for historical fiction, and a Sydney Taylor award. Illustrated books for younger children include BEARSKINNER, which the Wall Street Journal considered one of the 20 best books published in the last twenty-five years, Parents' Choice winner THE NIGHT FAIRY, and PRINCESS CORA AND THE CROCODILE, with uproarious pictures by Caldecott medalist, Brian Floca.
Schlitz's interest in ancient history and archaeology led to a non-fiction biography, THE HERO SCHLIEMANN, and the recently published AMBER AND CLAY: the story of a Thracian slave-boy, Sokrates, and a child-priestess who served as one of the Little Bears of Brauron.
Her tenth book is THE WINTER OF THE DOLLHOUSE, a middle-grade fantasy that will be released September 2nd, 2025.
Schlitz lives in Baltimore, where she served 34 years as Lower School Librarian and storyteller for the Park School.
