I come from the land of grits and kudzu where the summers are hot enough to cook eggs on concrete―in other words, Georgia. As a grown-up, I've moved from Georgia to New Mexico to South Carolina to California to North Carolina to Oregon to Pennsylvania and, finally, back to Oregon where I live and work today in my rolling RV home beneath a giant redwood. My love of mysteries came from my mom. She always snuck off to bed early and could be found curled up with mystery. I have never felt as at home with writing as I do in the land of cozy mysteries. Learning to craft a compelling mystery has been a lesson in humility and drive. My hat is off to every mystery writer out there! As a mystery writer, I do tons of research, delve deeply into human nature, explore the natural world, visit amazing places, and keep my butt in the seat guzzling caffeine and pounding keys far more than I've ever done in my publishing career. About halfway through each book, I write the story into a knot I don't think I can ever untie. It takes a lot of walking, a lot of sitting and staring off into space, a lot of hair pulling, a round or two of tai chi, and about a week to tease that knot apart and start the flow again. I started writing in my teens, thanks to a teacher who said, "You should be a writer!" Aren't teachers wonderful? I graduated from Humboldt State University in Arcata, California, with Masters degrees in literature and teaching writing, then spent twenty years as an editor of magazines and books. My five children played a big part in why I decided to specialize in children's literature. I've been the coordinating editor of Highlights for Children, a senior editor for Boyds Mills Press, and a book development manager for Uncle John's Bathroom Readers for Kids. I've also been a university instructor, a teacher with the Institute of Children’s Literature, and a writing workshop leader. I love to help other writers find their voices and advance in their craft and do so as a writing coach. Though I was born in Georgia, the Pacific Northwest has been the home of my heart since I first discovered its wonders. I'll be rambling through the redwoods and rolling along the coastal highways and byways crafting mysteries for as long as my brain keeps ticking and my fingers keep typing.
