Karen Maharaj was born in Trinidad. She graduated from the University of South Florida with a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems and Decision Sciences. Karen spent over 25 years working in healthcare IT. A near-fatal lightning strike prompted her transition into writing. Her first book, Struck by Reality (published 2020), depicts this event. They journeyed to Siesta Key beach, where a thunderstorm resulted in them being struck by lightning. James did not survive. In those moments, time stopped. Forced to be mindful because there was no other moment, she could not find the words to explain what had transformed in her. From then on, Karen attempted to make sense of being alive, while James, who was standing next to her, had not survived. Karen published Peter Crane Mountain Goat in 2023. The narrative beautifully captures themes of courage, leadership, resilience, and personal growth through the journey of a young mountain goat learning to guide his herd.
