Joan Richter is the author of THE GAMBLING MASTER OF SHANGHAI and OTHER TALES OF SUSPENSE. An award-winning writer, her fiction has appeared in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and themed anthologies. Raised and educated in New York City, where she received a BA from Hunter College, she set out to see the world. She lived in East Africa for two years, when her husband was deputy director of the Peace Corps program in Kenya. Along with their two small sons, they visited volunteers in remote villages, and traveled extensively in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. She consulted for Peace Corps Washington on the role of staff wives overseas. As a freelance writer and editor, Richter was a stringer for The New York Times metropolitan section and contributing editor to Westchester Magazine. She became travel editor of The Trib and then joined American Express, publishers of Travel & Leisure, as director of public affairs. She was the company’s representative to the United Nations World Tourism Organization. In her career she traveled to more than sixty countries, and draws on her adventures in different cultures to weave exotic tales of intrigue and mystery. Most recently from Washington DC, she and her husband, Dick Richter live in Issaquah, a suburb of Seattle.
