I began writing after spending 30 years as a National Park Ranger, proving that it IS possible to enjoy two “dream careers” in a lifetime. All three of my books draw upon my experiences in eight parks all across the USA.
One of those assignments included supervising a 19th-century living history farm which used the same pioneer skills that are described in my newest book, “Saltgrass Prairie Saga: A German American Family in Texas.” This book offers a fresh look at frontier life and the Civil War in Texas, as told through the lives of a family who came from Germany to Texas in 1845. They became pioneers on a vast coastal prairie east of Houston, only to eventually find themselves caught up in the Civil War.
My first two books, “Hey Ranger! True Tales of Humor and Misadventure from America’s National Parks,” and the sequel, “Hey Ranger 2 . . .” are based on real-life examples of what can happen to anyone on vacation when “they headed West, but their trip went South.” I’ve been grateful for the response to both books, and these timeless stories continue to attract readers of all ages.
