Ian Kemish AM is an Australian author, not-for-profit chair, and former diplomat.
Over a 25-year career with the Australian Government, he served as Australia’s Ambassador to Germany, High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, International Adviser to the Prime Minister and Head of Australia’s consular and crisis management service. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his leadership during Australia’s response to the 2002 Bali bombings.
In 2022 he published The Consul, an insider account of international crisis management and diplomacy. In 2026 he published Two Islands, a novel informed by his experiences in the Balkans and his longstanding family connections to Scotland’s Western Isles.
Today Ian serves in advisory, academic and not-for-profit leadership roles while continuing to write about history, international affairs and the people whose lives are shaped by major events. He is based in Brisbane, Australia.
