The family and friends of those with addictive disease struggle to deal with the chaos that the disease has brought into their own lives. On the Other Side of Chaos is a guide written directly to that audience by someone who has clinical expertise and who has lived with the nightmare of addiction in her own family. The guide is based on the science of addiction, the theory and practice of treatment and the twelve-step model of recovery, but it makes scientific information and theoretical concepts understandable to the public. Too often individuals equate “letting go” with “giving up.” They throw up their hands because they accept that they are powerless over another’s addiction. While acceptance of our lack of control is essential to coping with another’s disease, there is nothing passive about supporting a loved one in their journey to recovery. This concept is the foundation of the author’s original approach to empower individuals with knowledge about the disease, which, when coupled with acceptance of their lack of control over the result, allows them to make thoughtful and reasoned decisions to facilitate the recovery of both their loved ones and themselves.
