“Dr. Doe” has published more than 50 articles, chapters, and research papers. "Look, Ma! No Hands!", her first book, was published on Doe’s 80th birthday. Doe’s granddaughter, Courtney Davis, is the illustrator. Courtney is a student at Eastern Connecticut State University majoring in Early Childhood and Sociology. This is also her first book. Doe Hentschel doesn’t follow the crowd. Hardly an iconoclast, she has nonetheless blazed a trail unlike most of her contemporaries. A professional actress before she could read, she graduated from high school at 16 and college at 20. The recipient of a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship in a field which was excluded, at 21 and with her Masters in Speech in hand she taught high school for one year before bringing Brian and Karin into the world. In 1973, guided by a boundary breaking book, How to Go to Work When Your Husband Is Against It, Your Children Are Too Young, and There’s Nothing You Can Do Anyway, Doe began her career as an adult educator. When “Dr. Doe” retired at the age of 58 to be a hands-on grandma to Matthew, the first of her four grandchildren, she had served at nearly every type of institution of higher education and climbed the administrative ladder from coordinator to director, to dean and vice president. As a professor, she taught courses in Adult Learning and Development, Continuing Professional Education, Program Evaluation, Leadership for Change, and Group Dynamics. She began her post-retirement career in community leadership in 2000 to develop the Third Age Initiative™, Leadership Greater Hartford’s program to identify, develop and engage older adults in meaningful ways in the community. Twenty-two years later, at the age of 80, she has no plans to retire again. She holds a BA from the University of Missouri-Columbia, MA from Northwestern University, and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She has been recognized with many award over the course of her lifetime including the Preceptor Award from the Association of Leadership Programs, its highest recognition. In 2013, Dr. Doe Hentschel was inducted into the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame.
