Diego Fischer was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He studied Journalism at the University of Navarra (Spain) and Boston University.
For over a decade, Fischer has been the most widely read author in Uruguay, a country that, along with Argentina, has the highest number of readers per capita in the Americas. Its capital, Montevideo, has—proportionally—the same number of bookstores as Paris.
Fischer has received the "Libro de Oro" (Golden Book) award seven times, an accolade granted by the Uruguayan Chamber of Books to the best-selling books of the year.
His works are based on in-depth journalistic research and explore historical figures and events from a unique perspective. This approach has led several of his books to challenge traditional historical narratives, demystifying myths without destroying them, and demonstrating that past events were not always as they were originally told.
He has published 22 books, including notable titles such as Al encuentro de las Tres Marías. Juana de Ibarbourou más allá del mito (2008), which was declared a Golden Book by the Uruguayan Chamber of Books and is one of the five best-selling non-fiction books of the last 25 years in Uruguay. Other works include Qué tupé. Batlle-Beltrán. ¿Duelo o asesinato? (2010); Hasta donde me lleve la vida, a fictionalized biography of Carlos Páez Vilaró (2011); A mí me aplauden, a biography of China Zorrilla (2012); and Serás mía o de nadie. La verdadera muerte de Delmira Agustini (Golden Book, 2014). In subsequent years, he published Tres hombres y una batalla (2014), Carlota Ferreira. His later works include Doña Cándida Saravia.
Fischer has also produced, directed, and written scripts for twelve documentaries, including Cien años Punta del Este-Al este de la historia (2007) and Historias, relatos y sueños (2011). In 2016, he curated the exhibition La Comedia de China, a tribute to China Zorrilla organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Solís Theatre. In 2019, he directed a tribute to China Zorrilla organized by the Uruguayan Embassy in Buenos Aires, held at the Cervantes Theatre, with participation from prominent figures in the River Plate artistic community. Fischer is also the author of four staged plays and a columnist for the Uruguayan newspaper El País. Additionally, he directed and hosted the television program Los Notables for four consecutive seasons.
