Former news reporter Cato Pedder studied at Cambridge, SOAS and Kingston universities. Born in California and brought up in England, Pedder is descended from Afrikaner Prime Minister Jan Smuts. She has lived in South Africa and returns there regularly. Moederland: Nine Daughters of South Africa, published by John Murray in 2024, explores the roots and blossoming of apartheid, and her family’s part in it. She works for the Quakers and lives in Bristol with her husband and three children.
