Cathy Gunn was born in Tanzania, and grew up in Nigeria, ancestral Scotland, and parts of England before settling long-term in London. Her new novel 'Husbandry' is a witty, cosy (ish) crime 'whodunnit' with culinary elements that soon becomes a psyhological 'who will do it?' Her previous novel 'Felix Unbound' enjoys the destabilising, and recalibrating, effects that a cat-turned-human has on a tightly-knit group of friends and family, and was first published in 2020. Her non-fiction books, written during a long career as a financial journalist and financial editor at a variety of UK national newspapers and magazines, reveal what underlay some of the business scandals and dramas of the 1990s. A shift from journalism into arts fundraising for an ongoing, earlier love - the dramatic arts - diverted her first to the wonderful, inclusive theatre Chickenshed; and then to an iconic archaeological project in Shoreditch at the rediscovered site of London's first purpose-built playhouse since Roman times: James Burbage's renowned 16th century 'The Theatre'. Cathy raised funds to build a viewing walkway for the modern theatre company that owned the historic site at that point to show visitors the dig and its discoveries in progress. Following these brushes with the past, she studied for an MA in the History of Ideas, including a dive into the history of medicine. Research during that yielded a treasure trove of ideas and elements to draw upon for her fiction writing; and she is currently working on an intriguing historical fiction project. She has two adult children, two dogs, one husband; also loves art, and mentors an arts management MA student every year.
