Shafia Monroe, MPH, is a renowned midwife, author, and cultural historian, and the founder of SMC Full Circle Doula Training. She launched the first Black doula training nationally in 2002, in Portland, OR, and has trained over 5000 doulas. She is a leading expert on African American birth and postpartum traditions and teaches methods to improve the health of Black women, babies, and the community. Her groundbreaking work has been featured in various publications, including The Portland Observer, Madame Noire, Oregon Historical Quarterly, Double Dutch, Mater Mea, and the American Journal of Public Health. January 27, 2026, Monroe's book “Mothering the Mother: African American Postpartum Traditions, Recipes, and Healing,” with a foreword by Erykah Badu, launched worldwide to heal Black mothers from postpartum trauma and bring healing forward.
