Alison Hughes has published 20 books for children and young adults with translations into French, Dutch, Turkish and Korean. She won the Writers' Union of Canada's Writing for Children Competition and the R. Ross Annett Award (Alberta Literary Awards), and her books have been nominated for many awards, including the Governor General's Literary Awards, the Alberta Literary Awards and Ontario's Silver Birch. One of her books has been a Junior Library Guild selection and others have been listed as Bank Street College of Education Best Books of the Year.
