About this listen

To the outside world, they look like American royalty, giving to charities, feeding the homeless, and rebuilding the city. But behind closed doors is a constant battle for dominance between two bosses, cultures, and hearts. Ruthless People is a romantic crime fiction set in modern day Chicago and follows the life and marriage of Melody Giovanni and Liam Callahan - rivals by blood and leaders through fear. Their marriage was arranged by their fathers in hopes to end years of bloodshed between the Irish and the Italians. Liam believes he's getting a simple-minded wife, one he can control, one who bends to his every need...the complete opposite of Melody. She knows exactly what type of man he is and would rather die than give up the power she has spent her life building. The mafia of the past has evolved, and with rival bosses gunning for them, Melody and Liam will have to learn to work as one to take down those who stand in their way.

I have always loved a good mafia romance, but throw a kick ass woman and you definitely have my attention.
Meland Liam story gripped me from the first chapter. all the characters came alive for me and the plot had me coming back for more. The narrator was fantastic. this is not something that happens a lot.. that being said I would have preferred a woman to Narrate Melodies part, but still it was fantastic. wow I seem to be using that word a lot. but I truly did enjoy it!

the second book was a one click for me and no thought included. it was that easy of a choice.

the writer had me experiencing the highs and their Lows. The last chapter had me wanting to turn to the next book straight away.

This book was a five star for me and I highly recommend it. grab it today!

Ruthless People by J.J. McAvoy is a fast-paced crime novel that blends organized crime, power struggles, and high-stakes decision-making. As the first book in a series, it establishes a gritty world centred on two central figures navigating leadership, loyalty, and control.

The story follows Melody Giovanni and Liam Callahan, both positioned as strong, assertive leaders within their respective spheres. Their interactions are driven by conflict, strategy, and competing priorities rather than sentiment, which sets this audiobook apart from more traditional genre entries. The narrative focuses heavily on actions and consequences, with frequent plot developments that keep the story moving forward.

Joel Froomkin’s narration is steady and clear, providing consistent pacing throughout the audiobook. His delivery helps distinguish characters and supports the tone of the story without distraction. The narration works well for a plot-driven novel, making it easy to follow even during longer listening sessions.

One of the audiobook’s strengths is its structure. Chapters are purposeful, and there is minimal downtime between major events. The story maintains momentum, regularly introducing new challenges or shifts in direction that keep the listener engaged. As a result, it is easy to continue listening for extended periods.

This audiobook may appeal to listeners who enjoy crime fiction with morally complex characters and a focus on leadership dynamics rather than romance or introspection. Overall, Ruthless People is a solid introduction to the series and offers enough intrigue and continuity to encourage continuing with later instalments.

Ruthless, Fast-Paced, and Unapologetically Dark.

The narrator tried his best and did ok, the story was horrific I gave up half-way I’m sorry but these MC are obnoxious. I was REALLY looking forward to a Lady Mob Boss but the execution on this one wasn’t it. 1 out of 5 stars
