About this listen

It all started when I left my roots behind. Meeting the man of my dreams is icing on the cake.

Devin

I've escaped my small town to attend college in Phoenix. It's time I quit living a lie and break free of my strict Mormon background.

So, what do I do? Join a pop-punk band as the lead singer. And if that's not enough, I'm determined to embrace my gender fluidity.

When a tall, dark, and handsome man walks into the bakery where I work, I'm ready. My virginity isn't all I'll lose.

As he becomes the most accepting and supportive person I've ever met, he might steal my heart.

Brandon

I've accepted the fact that I have a type—a type of guy. That guy is Devin.

From the moment I saw him, I knew he was special. I had to have him.

As I watch Devin transform into the person he's meant to be, it's clear he's conflicted. And I'll stop at nothing to keep him safe.

But when disaster strikes, can we strengthen our bond? And who will he become in the end?

I was excited to listen to On a Different Mission by Christie Gordon, but unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations. I struggled with Brandon as a character— I felt he was insensitive because of his frequent mentioning of his ex-girlfriend to Devon, including intimate details, and the fact that even though he and Devon were boyfriends, Brandon still kept a photo of her in the bedroom. This felt unsettling and upsetting making it hard for me to connect to him and with his relationship with Devon. Honestly, if I were in Devon’s shoes, I would have found that difficult to overlook. I felt that Devon should have issued an ultimatum or told Brandon to take a hike.

That said, the story itself was okay, and I did enjoy the supportive group of friends who rallied around both Devon and Brandon. While it wasn’t my cup of tea mainly because of Brandon, fans of romance with strong friendship dynamics might still find something to enjoy here.
