About this listen

There are some debts you can't repay....

Josh Walker is loyal, reckless, and every girl's dream. But he only has eyes for December Howard, the girl he has yearned for since his high school hockey days. Together they have survived grief, the military, distance, and time as they've fought for stolen weekends between his post at Ft. Rucker and her schooling at Vanderbilt. Now that Josh is a medevac pilot and Ember is headed toward graduation, they're moving on - and in - together.

Ember never wanted the Army life, but loving Josh means accepting whatever the army dictates - even when that means saying goodbye as Josh heads to Afghanistan, a country that nearly killed him once before and that took her father. But filling their last days together with love, passion, and plans for their future doesn't temper Ember's fear, and if there's one thing she's learned from her father's death, it's that there are some obstacles even love can't conquer.

Flight school is over.

This is war.

Contains mature themes.

I discovered Rebecca Yarros through Fourth Wing and have devoured this series (and steadily working my way through all her books). Her urgent storytelling and flawed beautiful characters draw me in every time. Also Teddy Hamilton (and Carly Robbins) can read to me ANY time. Perfect.

Love this series

I think this is my 9th Rebecca Yarros book I’ve read and I thought I already knew of the level of devastation she could leave on your mind, heart and soul in a single book — I didn’t.
Not everyone comes home from war and nobody comes home unscathed and she makes sure you not only know that fact but you feel some iota of that stress and anxiety.
I started this book while coming off my anxiety disorder medication and, while I wouldn’t read the book again, I wouldn’t read it while doing that again as the level of immersion into dark feelings and rough storylines with a strong ongoing sense of "will they or won’t they work things out" throughout the whole book is next level impressive but also can be very intense. I actually had to put the book down for a few months as I never wanted to put it down but I was anxious, on the edge of my seat and often searching for tissues while reading it.
I think the incredible audiobook narration from Carly Robins and Teddy Hamilton really add to this level of immersive reading as well and I would highly recommend reading along to the audiobook or just the audiobook for the full depth of emotion throughout!
I’m lowkey terrified of what will happen in the next and final book in this series but I’m definitely going for it!
I’d like to say this book will have prepared me for any devastation in that next book, or any other books by this author that I read in the future, but I’m starting to understand that you can never be prepared for what Rebecca will throw at you and I’m ok with that!

Josh is a selfish immature ass hat and Ember is so incredibly naive. I found this book infuriating. They are the type of couple you eye roll at. they are so wrapped up in their own selfish lives to see anyone around them. and then, to ruin the elated mood of their best friends birthing suite with their immature relationship bullshit was the cherry on top. Best part of the book was the ending

infuriating
