About this listen

What if your life was a lie?

From the outside, Jay’s life seems idyllic–a 20-something who runs his family’s business with high disposable income and freedom. But in reality, Jay’s life is dictated by a bigoted, controlling, abusive father who insists Jay simply can’t be gay. Jay yearns for his own life with a dominant man, but it’s an out-of-reach pipe dream. When he meets Eric, a trained Dom, the most Jay can hope for is the occasional one-night-stand or quick fling.

Eric has his heart set on Jay, and not only for more than one night. Jay is the type of sub Eric could easily spend the rest of his life with. While trying to navigate winning Jay’s love, Eric’s life is further complicated by chasing down a killer who may be something other than human.

When Jay is targeted, Eric wants only to protect him. Can he save Jay’s life and win his heart as well?

Gay, single and in his early 20s, Jay is a competent manager of his family’s resort in Montana. Unfortunately, Jay’s father is a conservative senator who threatens and demands that Jay pretend to be engaged to a woman he hardly knows and keep his sexuality in the closet. Worryingly, a series of local murders are jeopardising the resort’s livelihood and Jay’s father hires seasoned ex-cop Eric as a security consultant, much to Jay’s frustration. But Eric is exactly the person Jay needs; he’s the perfect dom for Jay’s submissiveness and he gives good, reliable advice and safety tips. However, Jay isn’t always good at following the advice and his mistakes might just prove fatal.

I liked the premise of this supernatural thriller / age-gap romance a lot and I enjoyed the author’s writing style. I liked the spicy chemistry but I’m not a huge fan of instalove and this seemed even more rushed than most—I found it hard to be convinced that Jay and Eric could have developed such strong feelings within a few days. But the most unconvincing thing was Jay’s continued lack of self-preservation: for someone who had complied with his father’s unreasonable demands for years, Jay just didn’t seem to want to comply with Eric’s incredibly sensible advice. It was a bit infuriating to watch! I also think the author missed a lot of dramatic opportunities by keeping Jay’s fiancée so low profile. Having said all that, it was a very entertaining, steamy, and absorbing story. 🎧 Voice actor Samuel Mann did a competent job of the audio narration.

Rushed instalove but absorbing romantic thriller!
