About this listen

Every good Dick needs a sidekick.

Actor Tom Lewis’s world came crashing down when a honey trap and tabloid expose outed him and put pay to his flourishing career. The housewives favourite was most well-known for his role as Detective Fox in the quaint British series 'Malmesbury Murders'. But after the media speculation about his sexuality, the show is on hiatus and Tom hasn't worked for six months.

Now things are getting serious, money is running out and Tom needs a job desperately. So when his agent offers him a seasonal acting job, he reluctantly agrees and takes on the role of Santa for a top London department store. This decision changes Tom's luck. When Tom overhears two unidentified store workers discussing a job to get a little Christmas bonus he realizes the 'job' is of an illegal sort. Now, Tom could call the police, but then again, wouldn't it be great for his flagging career if Detective Fox saved the day? So Fox is on the case, and as every good Dick needs a sidekick, Tom decides a sexy young elf named Eli Mason will fit the role, in more ways than one!

FYI. This is a cozy M/M Romantic comedy.

Kind of fun story but maybe the story was too short to evoke any type of emotional connection, that part was unfortunately completely missing for me.

Maybe it's just me but...

After many years in the lead role, veteran actor Tom Lewis is very attached to his murder-mystery character, Detective Fox. Unfortunately, the show is in hiatus with rumours they may recast the role with a younger man. Desperate for short-term work, Tom reluctantly agrees to a lucrative role as Santa for a leading London department store which hosts a Christmas extravaganza each year. He’s mildly comforted by getting to know one of his elves, the precocious and talented young actor / acrobat, Eli Mason. Eli has always had a huge crush on the hunky, deep-voiced Detective Fox and he wonders if all the scandalous rumours about Tom are true. Any romance is quickly sidetracked when Tom and Eli discover a complex plot to use secret shoppers to steal from the store during the Christmas rush. Rather than go to the police, Tom convinces Eli that it will be good for their careers if they do the detecting and foil the plot themselves, but is anything ever that easy?

This festive age-gap romance was loads of fun, utterly entertaining and absorbing with a lovely feel-good vibe. I couldn’t believe how much was packed into a novella (186 pp, just under 4 audio hrs)! There was the slog of Eli and his acrobatic-acting partner JJ’s audition to get the elf roles, Eli’s entanglement with another actor who was talkative and jealous, Tom’s problems with finding acting jobs, the rehearsals, the crime plot, and the seriously steamy, slightly kinky romance between Tom and Eli. I really liked Tom and Eli as characters and we didn’t get any tedious relationship angst—both guys were so level-headed and communicated well. The cherry on this delicious Christmas Cake was 🎧 British voice actor extraordinaire Gary Furlong, he has a wonderful narrating voice and he never ever puts a foot wrong—absolutely brilliant!

Funny, sexy Christmas mystery / romance!
