Adler-Olsen and Pacey - a marriage made in heaven!
We've now listened to all four of the Department Q stories and enjoyed them all. Adler-Olsen just gets better and better, and Pacey is such a wonderfu..Show More »l reader. It still tickles me that all these Danes have regional English accents!
The story lines are quite gruesome and contorted at times, but it is the development of the stable characters - Karl, Assad and Rose/Ursa - that I have loved the most. Assad remains a mystery and some of his adages are quite hilarious, especially in the way that Pacey tells it! To find yourself laughing in the midst of a series of terrible unsolved crimes is bizarre, but laugh we did - it just makes Assad more loveable - they're all loveable in their own unique, weird ways.
Adler-Olsen weaves a clever tale, with plenty of psychological background of the perpetrators of the crimes to make their actions understandable, albeit inexcusable. However, the development of the main characters that go from book to book, is endearing. You're left wondering about their psychological backgrounds and wanting more information, which he metes out in piecemeal fashion to keep you wanting more - clever! I can't wait for the next book and I hope that Steven Pacey continues to read the story to us. Together they make a brilliant combination! When is the next one coming out????
What do I love about the Department Q Series? The characters! We learn a little more each book about the main characters: Carl (or is it Karl?), Assad..Show More » and Rose. We also learn a little about camels too! Steven Pacey's narration is just so good. I want to know more about Marco too. Each book in the series gets better and better. The story line is just a by-product! It's good and convoluted enough to be interesting, but for me, the strength lies in the development of the personalities. It's easy to grow attached to them! We found ourselves laughing out loud many times! Wonderful! Can't wait for the next one 😊.
Final in the 7 book series - didn't want it to end
I have grown to know and love the characters at Dept Q, and I was sad the book/series ended. This audio version got a bad review because after 6 book..Show More »s, the narrator was changed, and while it took a few chapters to adjust to the new reader, my ear attuned and I don't know why other listeners didn't like him. Possibly not quite as good at the character voices or at least replicating them the way Steven Pacey did, but I enjoyed this narrator, and more than that, I forgot about his voice and focused on the characters who I know and love.
