London, 1891. Strange murder appears on the seamy streets. Someone is killing women and gutting them for their body parts. Is it Jack the Ripper returned, or a far more sinister plot afoot than murder? Magician Leopold Kazsmer, the Great Enchanter, ashamed of his Jewish-Gypsy blood, has fashioned himself into a proper English gentleman, though he harbors a carefully guarded secret; he has learned the dangerous art of summoning daemons and through it, performs real magic. Leopold must discover what is behind the revolting murders.

The beautiful and mysterious Mingli Zhao, special inspector from Scotland Yard, enlists the help of Leopold Kazsmer, the Great Enchanter, who uses his skills with summoning Jewish demons to perform true magic to help solve supernatural crimes. Meanwhile, a Hungarian Romani - part man, part clockwork - will stop at nothing to kill the man he believes is responsible for his hell of an existence that is slowly grinding his mind into the nothingness of gears and pistons. 

Magician Leopold Kazsmer, the great enchanter, and his cadre of unusual friends, make the deadly journey to the Library of the Damned, a structure fluctuating between the worlds, filled with the archives of the centuries, to find a way to rescue Leopold’s father who is trapped in the darkest depths of Gehenna and to break the covenant Leo has made with the dread Unholy Hosts. They have suddenly called upon him to fulfill their agreement, and because he is bound to them, he has no hope but to obey. It seems that what they most desire is to destroy Leopold’s world.
