  • Understanding the Cattle Market: Navigating Challenges with Cattle Business Systems
    May 13 2024

    Balance 4 Ward

    1. Cattle feeding company based out of SW Iowa, focused on helping and creating more opportunities for the mid-market cattlemen
    2. Level the playing field for them so they can compete in the industry
    3. We primarily do two things as a company – We Feed Cattle. Provide Additional Services to Cattle Feeders to help them make more money
    4. One of those services being our Cattle Business Systems
    5. Addressing Challenges in Cattle Ranching:
    6. Could you elaborate on the various challenges cattlemen face on a daily basis?
    7. In what ways were these challenges impacting your profitability and competitiveness in the industry?
    8. As we record in Spring of 2024 what type of a market are we coming out of and what type of market are we currently sitting in?
    9. Cattle Business Systems
    10. What is it?
    11. Well, we recognize that cattlemen wear multiple hats every day and deal with lots of different people : Examples (scrap the pens, processing cattle, oh and your order buyer is calling you saying he’s got a good deal on cattle, while your broker is wanting you to trade the crush and hedge cattle…etc..)
    12. We faced the same thing in our operation, and therefore we weren’t competing in the industry.
    13. So we spent time and focused on who was winning in the industry and concluded that we needed to develop a team of people to help us align all of our decisions in our operation and keep us accountable
    14. Why does CBS work?
    15. The Concept Behind Cattle Business Systems:
    16. What inspired you to develop a team-based approach to tackling these challenges?
    17. How does Cattle Business Systems aim to align decisions within a cattle operation and ensure accountability?
    18. Empowering Cattlemen:
    19. What are ways we can empower cattlemen to make informed decisions?
    20. What advantages do some producers have over others?
    21. What is the vision of Balance4Ward for the future of the cattle market?
    22. What indicators have your crew/team been paying attention to?
    23. The Sale
    24. So, Cattle Business Systems, is a monthly membership, that includes a monthly meeting and gives them full access to our team along with full transparency of what we are doing in our own operation to help give them confidence to make decisions and get more of an equal advantage in the industry
    25. Our job is to meet with our clients every month, identify opportunities, help them prioritize those, and execute if needed.
    26. And if guys need help executing on those decisions, we have additional services through our platform that we can help them do that – B4W Advantage, B4W Feeders, New Balance Commodities, B4W Operations

    1. Why Balance4Ward?
    2. We do it, we have skin in the game
    3. Totally transparent on what we are doing in our own operation at B4W
    4. Everything from risk management, feed, operations, buying/selling of cattle, corn
    5. There is no conflict of interest – not trying to margin you into something else
    6. Example: How does this decision affect all the other ones I have to make in my operation
    7. Proactive in everything we do (18 months) – we try to maximize/ be the best at profit per head – not about to volume to us
    8. Separate the farmer vs. The feeder
    9. Contact us for more information. What are the next steps in learning more about us and what we have to offer?
    10. What is the best food you have ever eaten and where did you get it from?

  • Exploring Land Investment Strategies with Justin Bruch
    May 6 2024

In this episode of the Farm4Profit Podcast, we're honored to welcome Justin Bruch, a fifth-generation Iowa farmer and Co-Founder of AgFunder.com. With a rich background in agriculture spanning four continents, Justin brings a wealth of experience to the discussion.

Justin's journey in agriculture began on his family's farm in Iowa, where he cultivated a deep appreciation for the land and its potential. After earning his bachelor's degree in Agronomy from Iowa State University in 2000, Justin embarked on a remarkable career that has taken him across North America, South America, Europe, and Africa. Along the way, he has gained invaluable insights into different agricultural practices, market dynamics, and investment opportunities.

As the Co-Founder and Chairman of AgFunder.com, Justin has played a pivotal role in revolutionizing agriculture crowdfunding. With a 100% focus on funding agriculture projects, AgFunder.com has become one of the largest platforms of its kind in the world, empowering farmers and entrepreneurs to bring their ideas to life.

In our conversation with Justin, we explore the intriguing topic of land investment and its significance in securing the farming future. We delve into the reasons why people invest in land, examining its long-term benefits and potential for growth. Justin shares his insights on alternative methods for land acquisition beyond traditional means, such as inheritance, cash purchases, or bank financing.

Furthermore, we discuss the economics of purchasing land in the current environment, addressing common concerns about cash flow and record-breaking land prices. Justin sheds light on how implementing organic practices can affect access to land, highlighting the challenges and considerations involved in transitioning to organic farming.

One particularly fascinating aspect we explore is the role of land investment in the carbon market. Justin explains how investing in land can contribute to carbon sequestration and water conservation, aligning with sustainable farming practices and environmental stewardship.

Throughout our conversation, Justin emphasizes the enduring appeal of land investment, despite potentially lower returns compared to other market options. We examine the non-monetary benefits of land ownership, including lifestyle factors, legacy considerations, and the satisfaction of preserving the environment.

As we look to the future, Justin shares his predictions for emerging trends in land investment and sustainable practices. He discusses potential challenges and opportunities on the horizon, offering valuable insights for farmers and investors alike.

  • Unveiling the Power of Micro-Captive Insurance - The 831(b) Advantage
    Apr 29 2024

In this insightful episode of the Farm4Profit Podcast, we explore the fascinating world of Micro-Captive Insurance with none other than Van Carlson, the esteemed Founder & CEO of SRA. With over twenty-five years of experience in the risk management industry, Van brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table, sharing valuable insights on how small to mid-market businesses can leverage 831(b) Plans to effectively manage their property and casualty risks while enjoying significant tax benefits.

Van's journey in the industry began with Farmers Insurance Group, where he started as an agent and swiftly rose to prominence, growing his book of business to become one of the largest in his home state of Idaho. Today, his primary goal is to continue the upward trajectory of SRA, constantly innovating and developing new products to meet the evolving needs of the market.

The heart of this episode lies in understanding the intricacies of 831(b) Plans and how they offer a unique opportunity for business owners to retain up to 50% of their risk and premiums. By placing funds in a tax-deferred 831(b) Plan, businesses can build a funded reserve for potential losses, thus gaining greater control over claims and even participating in underwriting profits within their plan. It's an ideal strategy for savvy business owners willing to take calculated risks for greater rewards.

Van also draws parallels between 401(k) and 831(b) accounts, shedding light on their similarities in terms of tax benefits, contribution limits, and compliance requirements. However, the real magic of 831(b) Plans lies in their ability to mitigate various business risks that may not be covered by traditional insurance, such as supply chain interruptions, cybersecurity attacks, and even brand damage.

Delving deeper into the history of 831(b) Microcaptives, Van discusses the legislative milestones and regulatory framework that have shaped their evolution over the years. From the Tax Reform Act of 1986 to the more recent PATH Act of 2015, which increased premium amounts and introduced inflation riders, these legislative developments have made 831(b) Plans an increasingly attractive option for businesses seeking comprehensive risk management solutions.

Join us as we unravel the complexities of Micro-Captive Insurance and discover how it can be a game-changer for your business's risk management strategy. Whether you're a seasoned entrepreneur or just starting out, this episode offers invaluable insights into safeguarding your assets and maximizing rewards in today's dynamic business landscape. Tune in now to learn from the best in the industry and take your risk management strategy to the next level.
