Publisher's Summary

A mysterious island.

An abandoned orphanage.

A strange collection of very curious photographs.

It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that makes for a thrilling listening experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets 16-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow - impossible though it seems - they may still be alive.

A spine-tingling fantasy, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.

Great story, performance made me wince

Dreadful voice actor. The accents were inconsistent and unbelievably bad. So distracting and such a shame. Can we re-record???

Dick Van Dyke Narrates!

Story is wonderful...twisted, dark, intrigue etc, but the narrator is AWFUL. Did he bother even listening to a Welsh accent before starting? Or perhaps, being raised on Mary Poppins, he thought all British Isles peoples sound like Dick Van Dykes woeful version of cockney? Awright cobbler! Ugh! Leave this version alone.

XMen of the 1800's

Someone said to me that this story seems like it's based on those "mutant" kids from XMen, but way back in time. Once this idea entered my head it was hard to shake, however I pressed on. But...

The narration is irritating. He has to slow down to do accents, and this makes most characters sound like they're simple, and in a lot of places gets them mixed up.

The voice he uses for Miss Peregrine, ugh. Most of time with males doing female voices in narratives, they tell the story so well that your mind gives life to the characters voice. The manly tones melt away into your imagination, and you don't notice them after a while. This character unfortunately sounds a little like Mrs Doubtfire after a brandy too many.

Despite the overly descriptive writing style, I was not able to picture the story in my mind as I usually can.

I so wanted to like this story.

Great story, badly told.

The story was great but the narrator was awful, the accents were just so bad it was funny. I would suggest you wait for a different narrator or read the book, if possible.

book might be better than audible version

For me the accents were quite bad. It's more of a kids book on audible but I'll try the written one and see if it's better.

Enjoyable Story

Would you consider the audio edition of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version.

What did you like best about this story?

It was a good flowing story. And the characters were fun to read about

Have you listened to any of Jesse Bernstein’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No, but I think that his voice is similar to that of Matthew Broderick.... luckily, I like Matthew Broderick haha

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Spoilers :D

Any additional comments?

I read this in preparation for the movie that comes out in September. Unfortunately, it's going to be like every other book to movie.... book is always better.

Oh dear ... so close!!!!!!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The story in itself is great. It is quite obvious why this book has been made into a movie. However - Ransom Riggs - how on earth (for one so young) could you think for one moment think that modern teenagers use phrases like 'parenthetical scars' ... the story is great but you need to talk to some kids and take lots of notes!!!! I have never in my 45 years heard ANY kid use such overblown language.

How could the performance have been better?

Yes!!!!! The narrator. Jesse Bernstein ... sounds young and inexperienced. Consequently his portrayal of the various characters leaves a lot to be desired. His enunciation is a crime against ones ears and his accents are fantastically horrible. However, it would seem that Mr Bernstein has been around the block once or twice so it is not wrong to have higher expectations. An investment in an awesome elocution teacher would be wise.

Loved this story but got awful narration

Really loved this story but I cannot handle the accents that are being placed in. Why didn’t get a British person, or someone who can hold a consistent accent, for such a good book / movie baffles me.

Record with someone who can do English accents

TL:DR Good story, bad accents.

I was quite enjoying the story of Miss Peregrine's having watched the movie a couple years ago and had been meaning to "read" the books. This recording did really well.... until we got to the island and the majority of accents were not American. Doing accents well is very hard and this narrator did well with the American characters, giving me a real sense of who the main character was, but unfortunately every character that we later meet on the island is a charactature and I could listen no further.

I have no trouble recommending this narrator for any books based in America, however it seems I have to go "old skool
and actually find some time to PHYSICALLY read these books LOL :)

PS I have returned this book after 5 hours.
